Sanders County Refuse District is a not-for-profit enterprise business that encompasses a Transfer Site in Thompson Falls and Roll Off Sites in Plains, Trout Creek, Noxon, and Heron.  This District and the Dixon Refuse District are governed by the Board of Commissioners.  Hot Springs is managed separately and is governed by its own boards.  For the west end refuse sites, please see forms below for schedules, recycling information and more.  Refuse District Board Meetings:  2nd Wed. 10:00 Commissioners Conference Room.  Agendas are posted on the Calendar link on the Sanders County website.  All Sites are CLOSED on FEDERAL HOLIDAYS.  (Sites do not have ‘make up’ days for those holidays.  We are sorry for any inconvenience that this may cause.)

HAZARDOUS WASTE:  Sanders County does not collect Hazardous Waste, but is working with MDEQ on having an event in the future.  Please check below on the link ‘Missoula Haz. Waste’ for more information in Missoula.  They will accept out-of-county haz-waste, but there will be a fee involved.

RECYCLING

SANDERS COUNTY ACTIVELY PROMOTES RECYCLING!  Due to current market conditions and high transportation costs, Sanders County is no longer able to accept plastics or paper for recycling.  Please click on the information sheet below titled ‘Current News on Recycling Plastics.’  Republic Recycling on 3207 W. Broadway in Missoula 721-1120 takes #1 and #2 plastics (transparent) as well as mixed paper.  Plastic grocery bags can be taken to Albertsons, Walmart & Target!

Check out our Recycling Brochure (under ‘Information’ below) which lists the items we accept.  It also gives ideas on what to do with items we can’t take. We have recycling drives such as E-Waste, (used electronics) so save up your used electronics for the next event, which is generally early summer at the TF Transfer Site.  The event in 2022 is June 4th, 9-2 at the Thompson Falls Transfer Site.  Bring anything with a cord, as well as old cell phones!  Sponsored by MDEQ and 406Recycling.  Recycling reduces the amount of refuse we haul to Missoula, and keeps the fees down!

2014 Used Electronics Recycling Event Yielded 9.79 Tons!

Forms, Information & Helpful Links

2021 E-Waste Event Collected 5 tons of used electronics!

WHAT IF WE JUST STOPPED RECYCLING?  As a person, you would not see a difference in one day.  However, there would be a huge impact on our landfills.  On average, each person produces 4.38 lbs. of waste per day.  To figure out how much waste would go to the landfills if we quit recycling, multiply 4.38 by 7.125 billion people on earth.  That’s 31.2 BILLION pounds of waste that would go to landfills every single day.  Sanders County alone recycled over 5 tons of used electronics in 2020.  Do your part…do what you can to RECYCLE, REUSE & RECYCLE!
